Madrid, 19th September 2005
*Hello
Dear all: after a month of absence, I write again something regarding my staying in Madrid. Afterthe vacations, after August, after I assume that most people had come back from the holidays (for those that actually had any vacations), and that you would all be anxious, desesperade, even dying for some more news from Madrid. So here are some small and shallow paraghrafs:
*Project: As I probably stated before, my project concens the development of a constrol system philosofy foran hybrid system of 10 kW, formed by PV, a wind generator, a diesel generator and an accumuatinglead-acid battery system. To be able to make an analysis of the system, it is necessary to makea simulating programm.
I had the opportunity to observe this system, that is installed in the test facilities of CIEMAT, near the cit of Lubia, in the proinc of SORIA (250 km north of Madrid). There are there severalwind generators, a dataacquisition tower and some labs, two sets of pv pannels, containers with the batteries and the diesel generator.
The work that I have been developing in CIEMAT, in Madrid, is now to verify the theorethicall modelsof each one of the components, and to see that they can be used and programmed, to make a simulation of the system, and then to try to make some control rules and simulate future results. So far aredeveloped the models of PV, batteries and partly for the wind. What is still missing is the diesel and the cload models. After that I'll have to interconnect all the components with a controll systemwith the desired characteristics. Generally it sgoin well, and I hope to have some results before the end of the project.
*Visits to Toledo and Segovia
Toledo is situated about eighty km from Madrid. Its oldest part was built in hill, and is considered to be patrimony of the Humanity. The most recent part has been built on the around plane.
I visited it briefly, some weeks ago, and was wondering around the oldest part, going up and down in the narrow sstreets of the city. I wonder that all this part must have been built on the wakesof time. The colour of the houses is very similar to the colour of the surrounding land: somethingbetween the yellow, brown, with a touch of red - this is the colour that the land has during the Summer months. the walls of th houses are kept with the originall line, and even the most modernones, or renewed houses, keep the same colour and tye of architecture. From above , the city presents a more greyish tone and, surprising, seems to have less terraces that the dry weatherwold have led to assume. I the old part, the houses have no more than three to four floors.
Segóvia is about 110 km north of Madrid. Due to its well preserved urban architecture and itsaquedut, is also protected patrimony [Though I must say that the aqueduct of Lisbon is biggerand more impressive than the one in Segóvia]. The colour of the contructins of Segóvia is verysimilar to the ones in Toledo: a yelow-brownish stone, which made me wonder that this is the normal tone of the land in this part of the Iberian Peninsula.
*Spanish and portuguese people
Despite the proximity and the common legacy of the Iberian people, there are several living habits that are different in spanish and portuguese.
One of them is the life on the street. Generall speaking, the spanish have more the habit of making a social life on the street, around their homes or neighbourhoods, while portuguese peoplemake teir living more inside.
As to nocturnal life, there is the tendency to stay insie during the more heat-opressing hours, during the Summer, for, in general, the shops are closed during that time. After six the shops open again and people start going out again and wander about the street until nine, when the shopsclose. Then they go to restaurants or cafes, that are kept open until late (at least mdnight). Ithnk that there are more caffe places on the street, and more people in these, that in Portugal.
The urban nocturnal parties seem to be very similar to the portugues ones: music in high-speakers,in the street; many drinks being sold in plastic cups in open caffes or stret stands; couples, oreven whole families, walking around the street jst talking. I do not believe that the spanish talkmore or higher than the portuguese, but there is here a higher tendency for a social life.
*Walking around in Navacerrada: North from Madrid, only one hour by car, is the montain formation of the Sistema central (Central System), that belongs to a rocky massive system of the Iberian Peninsula. the part that takes placein the zone of Madrid eis composed by four destinctive montain zones. Amoung these are the ones ofSerra de Guadarrama, Sierra de Gredos (souther, near Ávila) e Sierra de Ayllón (Guadalajana).
Locally, due to the proximity of the cities of Navacerrada and Puerto de Navacerrada, one of the places is called Serra de Navacerrada (in the Serra de Guadarrama). It was in this montain zone that, during the past 10th September, I went for a walk, in a nice but tiring day.
My college Carlos, also a doctoral student in CIEMAT, has a habit of, during weekends and with a group of friends, to go walking in the montain. I was able to go along last weekend. We went along the summit of the "Siete Picos", enjoying the amazing view on both sides of the montain. to North was the plane near Segóvia, to South several small cities until we see Madrid. During our little excursion we came to 2100 m of altitude (Puerto de Navacerrada is about 1900 m above see level), with cold, wind, desconfort and a complete change of conditions in relation to the spanish capital. I spent arole of film on the severall views from the summit.
*The return of the Autumn The climate has deeply changedduring the last weeks. There is no doubt about it. the shortening of the days led to a decrease f temperature, that started to be felt about two weeks ago - producing ashock to many Madrilen people that were coming back from holidays. After those days te cold reallystarted, it rained, and then the air was warmer again. But now the air is cold and dry, which reminds me of the winter in Lisbon (without the wind, fortunately). I was told that it should start to rain in October/november, and the cold temperature shuould come during the Christmas month.
This rain would be most welcome, regarding that there are still adds to save on water (they should show them all year round, not just now), and the water reserves are about less then half their normal water capacity. If it does not rain there may start to be water racioning.
*Several
Like the INETI and IST, also CIEMAT has a canteen ("comedor") that serves lunches from 14:30 to 15:00 during the summer. The pupose of this apparently absurd schedule is to allow emplyees to startvery early in the morning and to leave early afternoon. Actually, some take advantage to go toeat at home and stay there, while others still work during the afternoon. This working and eatingschedule has now been terminated in the past friday.
I have tried to share divid my eting time among the several groups of people with whom I have contacthere in CIEMAT. I cold divide those essencialy on two groups: the one of wind energy, that has the most graduated, experienced and senior (among tem my boss); and the goup of the less graduate, almostall Phd students in CIEMAT with several kinds of schoolarships. Their professional position is verysimilar to the onther schoolarshipers in Portugal, concerning stability, precarity, social securitbenefics and payments, etc... Like in Portugal, there is an association that represents this group, the PRECARIOS (www.precarios.org).
*Cleaning e-mail During the past two months, in the work intervals, I have restarted to clean my yahoo e-mail account. But thos story strats elsewhere.
When I chose the free yahoo mail, in 1998 or 1999, that I still use, this virtal in-box had the capacity of 6 MB, something huge at the time (to myself). Alternative, a box with the huge capacityof 25 MB was proposed, as well as several other advantages, for the price of 50$/year (if my memoryserves me right). These two values were kept constant for several years. Their value alowed for a high quantity of messages and simple text files, mas tended to reach quickly its limit when I was sent photographs (the beggining of the golden age of the digital cameras), presentations, .exe and other huge files. Twice I hd my cota totally booked, and once I had to ask a friend to stop sending photographs (beautifull ones, actually).
Now this capacity sudenly increased, not long ago, o 15 MB. This allowed for a little more confort in the quantity of information recieved, without allowing for a certain quantity of vigilance. But the huge step came some weekslater, when thecapcity sudenlly increased to 100 MB. This allowed for a mch more relaxed management of the files, that I just kept there. Even the maximum quantity of information that I left in a e-box was no more than 60% of that value.
The biggest surprise came when the capacity inclreased t 250 MB for a few days and then leaped to 1 GB! Much more space that I culd possibly use - even now, the files occupy 3 to 4% of that value.
And what is my point when I tell you of this story? The point is, that when I restarted the systematic task of passing the files and texts to my HD (for I not always have access to the internet, and do not wish ot pay for astronomical high phone bills), I verified that I had some hundredsof kept messages in my in-box and other folders (mostly the "EUREC" and the "Others" folder). Of curse, the objective is to save these files into my computer.
*P.S.Today the eating schedule was changed. I only remeber because the person that usually lends me the eating card wrned me. From today the eating hours will be from 12 to 14. Cheers to all!
